Explaining Hammocks

I am sure to draw flack for this post. While trying to explain hammocks to friends, I found myself describing them as cots without frames. How would you explain them?

I would give them a few websites or print out some pictures of camping hammocks. Worth a thousand words and all that.

Do you mean that they don't know what a hammock is? (Never watched Gilligan's Island?) Or are you trying to describe its advantages relative to sleeping on the ground?

As previously mentioned, I would have a look at websites -- though I'd focus on hammock manufacturer websites.

Other than that, I see nothing wrong with trying to put things in your own words.

I've thought of them at times in terms of a being cocoon-like.

but if it has to be words, how about "like a hanging sleeping bag"?

You might be surprised by the number of folks out there that would never consider sleeping outdoors. It is just too primitive for them. Or, their background is oriented toward urban life without regard for other alternatives. They are not critical, just uninformed. It is fun to raise their curiosity, to challenge them with "new" ideas.

I did recommend Sgt Rock, and JustJeff. I know there others. These are two of my personal favorites.

Hmmmm..... Cocoon-like, ok, as long as they don't consider me to be a tent-worm
