I found extra layers of clothing didn't help me. I think because much of it gets compressed.

What has worked well for me is my military surplus poncho liner (i.e. woobie). I put it in the bag with me so it takes up all all the air space...thereby greatly reducing what my body has to heat up.

The woobie itself is surprisingly warm. It weighs about 1 lb (I cut mine down and it weighs quite a bit less now). It is sort of the equivalent of buying a bag that's 10-15 degree warmer. So the weight trade off is about the same and it gives me some options and is WAY cheaper!

I use the Big Agnes system... it taught me that anything compressible underneath me is basically worthless excess weight. I have an insulated inflatable pad under me and nothing else.
