First down bag for daughter

My daughter is 12 and has had an REI Volcano Jr. since she was about 6 yrs old. It has been a great bag; very full featured for a kids bag. I wonder why they discontinued it.
Now that she's a bit older, I feel like she is mature enough to properly care for a down bag and am looking for some recommendations. The synthetic bag is much tougher to compress and is a bit on the heavy side so am hoping to lighten her load and create more space in her smallish backpack.
