A poncho in a canoe is too floppy, not a good thing to have on if you do end up in the water, and will likely act as a sail when the wind comes up - fine if you want to sail to windward but not so good otherwise.

I use either rain gear or an anorak with chaps. Chaps aren't easy to find but they are easy to make. They are also easier to put on in the canoe. I often have a poncho with me for its multi-function uses but never wear it in the canoe.
