Wash / Clean Backpack

For those who've come to the point of cleaning or washing a backpack, how did you go about doing it?

I've done this a few times over the years. I've used a mild detergent and cleaned a couple by hand, and I've also put one in a mesh laundry bag and used a washing machine (gentle cycle) with mild detergent.

This has a lot to do with the materials of the backpack.
