PBP Episode 43 - Blue Mountain Heritage Trail

PBP Episode 43 - Blue Mountain Heritage Trail

Quote:
In this episode I talk with Dick Hentze. Dick is the Chairman of the Board for the Blue Mountain Heritage Trail Association [501(c)(3)].

Dick amd others are working hard to establish a new, long trail for backpackers and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy year-round. The Blue Mountain Heritage Trail (BMHT) is a loop trail of approximately 870 miles of remote, scenic wilderness located largely in northeastern Oregon.

The BMHT provides a footpath through one of America's greatest treasure troves of majestic scenery - complete with a wide variety of wildlife such as antelope, elk, moose, and wolves. Dick presents an open invitation and an exciting opportunity for listeners to get involved in the beginnings of a wonderful new wilderness trail.

Thanks for bringing my attention to this, I had no idea anyone was planning this! I grew up just barely south of the furthest southern reaches of his planned route; at least from what I can tell.

The map on the website is too low res- are there more precise maps available, so that people can check out the routes, as he requested in the podcast? I am particularly interested in the Logan Valley area. I find myself in the Silvies Valley on occasion, which is only 30 miles away.

Hi Jeff,

You're welcome. I'm pleased that this episode was of interest to you.

I've uploaded a map (showing route line) to the PB server, but it's not likely to be exactly what you need.

You can use the contact link to request more detailed information.

Is BMHT still an active project?

I first heard about the Blue Mountain Heritage Trail in Oregon and Washington on the 2009 Practical Backpacking podcast, which I just listened to recently. I am not finding any other information for it on the web except for a descriptive listing on the Baker, OR commerce web site, with no links there. The URL given for it goes to DNS etc. Is this still an active project? Can you direct me to more information about it? My daughter just moved to Spokane and we are looking at a lot of future vacations in that region and might like to hike it. Thanks!
