Modifications to River Rock headlamp (pics)

Bought this .5W LED headlight for $15...very compact, hi-beam, low beam, water resistant, ratchet tilt adjustment, excellent throw, impact resistant, semi-regulated power, supplied with Duracell alkies, and long-life. I had read a couple of good reviews of this light from guru/geeks that know everything about lights! Many comparisons made to mainstream lamps (eg, EOS, Aurora). These are the same light sold by the Streamlight brand. Requires 2 AAA batteries.

Removed all the straps and adjusters off the light (without tools or breaking anything) and replaced the main strap with the bucket strap (sans adjusters)...ie, the bucket strap became the only strap...fits my 7 5/8 head fairly good, probably fit smaller heads even more comfy. Light weighs about 2.5 ounces...could weigh less with a narrower strap.

Made a red filter using vellum tags that I found in the craft section at wally world...had to sand the aluminum frame of the vellum tag just a tad to get a snug fit of the filter into the casing of the light. I put clear tape on the vellum to reinforce it and make it more durable, and to also create pull tabs to allow me to remove the filter without problems...could have made the tabs better, but didnt take the time...filter stays in place without concern. I also made a storage pocket for the filter when not in use (see photo 3)...simply drilled two holes into the base and wrapped some malleable wire as shown.

Good job on the mod. Nice headlamp too - a real sleeper. More people should know about it. Good alternative for someone who doesn't need the power of the Eos, but need more light than a Tikka+.

Nice work! Are those vellum tages used as bingo chips?

Not sure what they are used for. They have string attached to them...look like they are gift tags...come in a bag with different shapes and sizes. Made out of thin, paperish material. Very lite weight. I removed the string which runs through a hole in the vellum...i was able to make a patch of proper diameter using a leather punch. You can see the patch if you look carefully. The clear tape held the patch in place.
